Offering musical and electronic products, education

As published in the Northern Wyoming Daily News, August 2001

From the trombone for Johnny to begin music lessons, to a full line of electronics, Hedge music has grown because of their commitment to not only provide a quality product, but also to provide the education to allow customers to get the most out of their purchase.

Owner Dan Frederick said the business began 26 years ago as a band instrument store for youngsters just beginning their music career.

"My father-in-law started the business in 1975, I joined him in the summer of '76, and permanently in "77.

"It wasn't long before we figured out that, in this small population, you couldn't support a store on just band instruments. That's when we blossomed into piano, organs, and keyboards."

In 1978 they added electronics - home and car audio - to their line of musical products.

"We built the new store in Powell in '78," Frederick said. "In 1981 I came down here and started this store."

The original Worland Hedge Music store was at 202 North 7th, but in 1983 they needed more room, a more visible location, and moved the business to its present location on Big Horn Avenue.

"That's about the time we started getting into satellite, TVs, and video home electronics." He added with a laugh, "Those were the days of BIG dishes ... it took three men and a boy to lift them."

In about 1987-88, they expanded their line of tapes, now CDs, to offer more of a variety of music styles and artists.

"That was also about the time we got into commercial sound - PA systems in churches, schools, auditoriums, places like that."
